"Make comedy legal again?" Er, bullying, racism and xenophobia isn't comedy...

“Make comedy legal again” Elon Musk tweeted on X yesterday (28th April). By that, I am assuming he means ‘comedy’ that laughs at disadvantaged people, maybe even people from different, i.e. non-white, cultures, given that the tweet included a video snippet from another X account called “End Wokeness”.

If so, this isn’t bringing back comedy, it is bringing back bullying without appropriate censure.

Just to remind folks what exactly we are talking about, back in the 90s for example, comedian Bernard Manning defended the ‘n’ word and ‘c’ word as historical terms with valid roots, and in 1998 he even admitted he was a racist on The Mrs Merton Show.

This, I presume, is the kind of thing Elon wants to bring back.

And sure, I am not the only one who thinks this is just a call to bring back bullying, xenophobia and racism thinly disguised as ‘comedy’. One response to Elon’s tweet, for example, said that his problem is that he thinks that racism and xenophobia is okay but that is not humour. Another comment observed that women had rights for 50 years before the likes of Trump and Musk took them away.

These responses proliferate. Another wryly observed that the world is becoming a place where billionaires have the power to turn back time and make racism acceptable again.

Thankfully, there are many, many, people who think the same way.

Elon, you are way out of line here.
